Salisbury School, as one of the premier independent preparatory boarding schools in the Northeast, required new athletic facilities to promote their students in their physical and competitive growth and development. Out of this need, the Flood Athletic Center was borne to house all of Salisbury's athletic and recreational space under one roof. As headmaster Chisholm Chandler has stated repeatedly, the new Flood Athletic Center met "a dream for the boys."

Built on a tight site surrounded by wetlands, the new 95,000 square foot building houses hockey, squash and basketball functions. The brick and glass exterior has energized the campus and creates an inviting building for athletes. A concourse level racetrack design connects all athletic facilities functionally and visually by providing clear views into all athletic and public spaces. A mural memorializing all Salisbury sports programs wraps the length of the concourse.

As constructor, Newfield worked closely with the owner, owner's representative and designer to anticipate and solve problems before they impacted the budget and schedule. Initially, Newfield realized the critical nature of steel fabrication and delivery, and worked closely with the team to assure its timely installation. We assisted the architect in identifying steel details and worked closely with the fabrication shop to make sure their sequencing plan adhered to the project's schedule. Another potentially major issue occurred half-way through construction. Salisbury decided they did not want the hockey rink installed on an existing slab, as designed. Newfield accommodated this change, with minimal schedule impact, and installed a new foundation with its own heating/cooling system.

• Eight squash courts
• Two weight room/fitness centers
• Host and guest locker rooms
• Training room with three whirlpools
• Wrestling room
• Hall of Fame Room for receptions and hockey viewing

Other amenities include rooms for video review, ski/skate tuning, and bike/tennis maintenance, concessions and a youth hockey room for weekend use.
