For the Hospital of St. Raphael, Newfield acted in a design-build capacity on Connecticut's second Cyberknife facility. Cyberknife is a radiosurgery system that eradicates cancer using beams of radiation, precisely focused, minimizing damage to healthy surrounding tissue. The unit's room required concrete walls and 9" of lead lining due to the power of the unit. The laser, with its precision, has the potential to eradicate certain types of cancers in 40-80 minute sessions and with significantly less frequency than traditional radiation therapy. The control room, equipment room, treatment planning room and office space was also included in the suite. Significant field coordination was required, as the space had been used to accommodate various departments over time.
