Cathedral Green - Catholic Charities

Hartford, CT

Affordable housing for low-income families was identified as a need in the Asylum Hill area of Hartford. The Archdiocese of Hartford, St. Joseph Cathedral and Catholic Charities determined and then acted on the need to provide clean, safe and affordable homes for families in need. The old St. Joseph's School on Asylum Avenue was chosen as a facility that could relatively easily adapt its use from school to multi-family housing. The building provides permanent housing to homeless families, families at risk of homelessness or those falling 50 percent below the area median poverty level.

As Construction Manager, Newfield renovated this 60,000 square foot building which now houses 29 apartments, ranging in size from 1,000 to 1,400 square feet. The apartments are split between two and three bedroom units. Some of the main features include a study room for children in each unit, an external playscape, a community gardening area and a community room for social events. Laundry rooms on each floor and a small gathering room adjacent to the laundry facilities enhance the quality of life for these residents.
