Choate Rosemary Hall

Wallingford, CT

ST. JOHN HALL

As part of Choate's academic convergence of arts, science and math, the new 34,000 square foot St. John Hall will complement Choate's existing Icahn Science Center and Mellon Arts Center for student development that transcends typical STEM curricula. The focus here is two STEAM labs (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) to teach creativity, innovation and design in a hands-on way. A robotics laboratory will be expanded and relocated to this building as will 12 classrooms focusing on chemistry, architecture, sculpture, renewable biofuels and other traditional and new programs. The center of the building offers a student and teacher lounge for collaboration. An adjacent cafe and auditorium with seating for 65 will complement the building's academic offerings. Newfield is sensitive to reducing environmental harm during construction, so signficant tree protection measures are in place for an ancient Copper Beech tree and other trees, and existing plant growth outside of the building's footprint. The on-site pond will also be carefully monitored during construction. St. John Hall will be LEED Gold Certified.

HEADMASTER'S HOUSE

This new custom 6,000 square foot, 2-story residence serves a dual purpose as the family's home as well as event and conference space for guests who visit the Choate campus. The 1,200 square foot event area with fireplace opens to a large bluestone patio with lush landscaping enhancing the entertainment area. The kitchen is contiguous to provide food preparation and serving needs. Also adjacent is a small conference room and office.

Pocket doors close off the entertainment area from the personal residence. The home includes twelve foot ceilings and six foot hallways connecting the living and dining rooms, kitchen, play room for the children and two offices . The master bedroom suite includes separate walk-in closets, bathroom and bedroom. There are three other bedrooms and four additional bathrooms in the home. The basement is partially finished for laundry, storage and recreation space. Custom millwork, high-end fixtures and appliances are included in this beautiful one-of-a-kind home.

The home is sited at the end of a cul-de-sac on a professionally landscaped wooded lot.

DEAN'S OFFICE AND DAY STUDENT LOUNGE

Newfield renovated an existing storage basement space into Dean's Offices, Day Student Lounge and Study Area and the John F. Kennedy Historical Library. This 5,000 square foot renovation was completed over the summer of 2010. Newfield was brought back in 2012 to renovate the remainder of the basement's 5,000 square feet for additional day student space.

PAUL MELLON ARTS CENTER

Restoring and renovating the entrance to this historic library building required attention to the smallest detail in order to achieve the desired results. Newfield coordinated the sitework including new limestone steps, new outdoor lanterns, ornamental railings and new entry doors with trim and surrounds. The project matches the historic nature of the facade and was completed in five weeks.

WORTHINGTON JOHNSON ATHLETIC CENTER

This new 16,000 square foot addition and 55,000 square foot renovation project incorporates a new fitness center, dance studio, trainer's spaces and international competition squash courts on one side and the existing field house with its glass cage as home to running track, two -basketball courts and renovated squash facilities on the other side.

Besides the new fitness center, two new international competition squash courts anchor the new addition. Additionally, four courts were converted for international play and six American courts were also rehabilitated. A dance and aerobics studio is complete with sprung maple floors and an adjustable dancing barre. Highly desirable is Choate's trainer suite used for player rehab, conditioning and training. A taping and first aid room, wet therapy room and physical therapy suite are incorporated in order to keep players healthy and fit.

A fresh face was required of the existing field house with renovation including skylights, lighting and finish upgrades providing a bright new and fresh feeling to Choate's existing "cage" with running track, basketball arena, and support facilities. A student and faculty locker room renovation was also included with this project phase.

FIRE PROTECTION PROJECT

Newfield has been upgrading Choate's fire protection service during summer breaks for the past few years.
