The Hopkins School - Malone Science Center

New Haven, CT

This new three-story steel supported brick structure with slate roof, houses The Hopkins School's state-of-the-art chemistry, biology and physics programs. Newfield provided general contracting services on this high-end building, which incorporated numerous design features including ganging 12 fume hoods into 1 artificial 5x15 foot chimney, allowing for the traditional look for which the school is known. On a complicated hillside site, Newfield constructed a 20 foot high concrete foundation wall to keep the facility well grounded. Complicated electrically, the facility included 35 data ports in each classroom and laboratory, telephone, alarm and cable was wired throughout, as well as in and output for electronic video boards. The science building was fully fireproofed and sprinklered satisfying life safety concerns.

Newfield built chemistry, biology, earth science and physics laboratories, general classrooms and lecture facilities, and offices and common spaces to encourage informal communication between faculty and students.

At the inception of the project, a residential home was located 200 feet to make way for the new science facility, and a new foundation was erected.
