Norwalk Fire Headquarters

Norwalk, CT

Newfield was the Construction Manager for this new 30,000 square foot LEED Gold fire headquarters in Norwalk. The new building includes apparatus bays, living quarters for 30, administrative offices, City of Norwak Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and an indoor training facility. The project's first phases included relocating existing personnel and equipment to temporary facilities, demolition of the current structure and then building the new fire headquarters on the same site. This challenging site is situated between I-95 and Route 1, requiring an intricate site logistics plan.

The building houses the City of Norwalk's EOC and the relocated City data center. Voice and data network hubs, and security and IT systems are designed at Tier III levels ensuring multiple independent distrubution paths, dual-powered IT equipment and full system redundancy assuring 24/7 operation regardless of outside events. In case of a catastrophic event, all key City personnel will assemble at the headquarters facility for safety, planning and communications.

The building also includes one of the most advanced on-site training facilities in the U.S. The three-story training structure mimics a residential building including residential sized windows and door openings. A smoke machine will imitate real-life conditions once the fire fighters enter the "home". Adjustable walls create new floor layouts simulating an unknown residential environment. A complex smoke exhaust system clears the air within 20 seconds of final drills. This system is tied into the overall building mangement system and when in operation the media bay doors automatically open creating a building vacuum ensuring efficient smoke evacuation. A confined space entry chamber is also included in the facility
