Reggio Magnet School of the Arts

Avon, CT
The Reggio Emilia approach to learning is an early childhood hands-on style where children have control over their learning through touching, moving, listening, seeing, and hearing; exploring relationships with other children and material items.

Newfield Construction was the Construction Manager for this new 435-student CREC School for the Arts which focuses on the talents of children with artistic ability. The building supports highlighting their accomplishments in both visual and performing arts. To this end, Ateliers (small workshop areas) and a Piazza (large gathering space) are the foundation of this school.

The Piazza, as the main gathering area and centerpiece, offer a large area for recitals, concerts, and art programs. The rest of the 66,000 square foot building links to the core Piazza and includes 6 pre-k and 15 kindergarten - fifth grade classrooms. One Atelier is located outside of groups of 3 classrooms, providing space for small group project work and displays complementing the hands-on Reggio style.

The gymnasium features stations including a climbing wall, wii spot, exercise machines and multi-function badminton and basketball space. The full kitchen and cafeteria open to a small bistro style area for smaller group discussions and interaction. Art studio with kiln, media center and music room that open to the Piazza are also offered to the student body.

The exterior of the building complements Italian style architecture by using masonry and brick. All finishes are environmentally sensitive and adhere to sustainability standards. The project adheres to State of CT High Performance Building Standards.
