For the Hospital of St. Raphael, Newfield acted in a design-build capacity on Connecticut’s second Cyberknife facility. Cyberknife is a radiosurgery system that eradicates cancer using radiation beams, precisely focused, minimizing damage to healthy surrounding tissue. The unit’s room required concrete walls and 9″ of lead lining due to the unit’s power. The control room, equipment room, treatment planning room, and office space were also included in the suite. Significant field coordination was required, as the area had been used to accommodate various departments over time.
Newfield was given additional work at the facility, which included upgrading adjacent common areas, hallways, and an entrance.
